Southern Mod Lite Racing Series Coming Sept. 1st to Tazewell Speedway

August 10th - After a dismal weather forecast for the first 4 races of the year, the SMLRS is looking forward to cooler temps and dryer weather for some hot racing action in the fall. The next scheduled event is on Sunday September 1st in conjunction with the 5th Annual Buddy Rogers Memorial at the Bad Fast Tazewell Speedway. Last year this SMRLS event was the first ever visit by the Mod Lites to the high banks at Tazewell. The event turned out to the be the race of the year as John Stout wheeled his #13 Pro Chassis from the last starting position up the 2nd place before spinning out on his own. The spin didn't dampen his spirits however as he restarted tail of the field again and was the only driver daring enough to challenge the top groove against the fence. This proved to be the fast way around as John passed car after car on the top side to take the lead with two laps remaining and held on to win the first SMLRS event at Tazewell Speedway!

We hope to see you at this event on September 1st and keep the rain AWAY!

July 7th - Excessive rainfall is 2013 for East TN has made racing difficult this year. Mother Nature swept the 4th of July week of racing at all area tracks. Stayed tuned and watch the schedule close for the make up dates.

June 17th - 4th of July week has always been a busy race week in East TN. This year's lineup looks no different with many area tracks hosting special events throughout the week. The SMLRS will visit Wartburg Speedway on Wednesday July 3rd and Smoky Mountain Speedway on Saturday July 6th for the next two races in the chase for the $2,000 points championship. Ross White will try to maintain his points lead over Brandon Cagle who just swept the weekend at Spring City and Wartburg.

May 26th - The weather finally held out for some dirt track racing in the Southeast. After numerous wet weather weekends the SMLRS was finally able to get a show in the books. 14 cars were on hand at North Georgia Speedway Saturday night. After Ross White started outside pole for the second heat and burned a battery in the race, Tim Price offered his ride to Ross for the feature. As a result Ross had to start 13th for the main event.

After a six car redraw, Brandon Cagle & Brent Jones brought the field to green. Coming off of turn 4 on lap #1 Jones drove in too deep and collected the 7 car of KD Knoedler and David Appleby. Jones went home on the wrecker while Appleby & Knoedler were able to join the field for a complete restart. Cagle set a blistering pace on the fast 1/3 mile high banks. 13th starting Ross White was wasting no time in advancing to the front. Picking off a car per lap Ross found himself 6th by the next caution on lap 7 for a 6 car pileup when Jackie Griffith tangled with another car collecting the bumper to bumper action behind them. Kd Knoedler was knocked out in this one along with Terry Martin, Jackie Griffith and David Ghorley. Racing resumed with Cagle out front and White on the move. Alan VanWhy worked his way through the accidents from 7th to 4th but spun on lap 14 to end his night. Leaving just 5 cars left it was Cagle & White up front for the 9 lap showdown. David Appleby was in tow with Billy Callahan on his back deck lid and Dustin Ghorley in a close 5th. Cagle & White ran door to door until lap 23 when White finally nosed him at the line for the lead. Cagle led the first 22 laps while Ross White lead the last 3 for the victory. Callahan moved past Appleby on the last lap to come home 3rd while Ghorley finished 5th.

Ross' patience in methodically passing car after car on the 1/3 mile high bank to earn him the thrilling victory and in the process took home the Westhaven Hard Charger Award. Total purse and contingency payout Ross earned $475 for the triumphant victory.

May 4th - Rain has moved into East Tennessee and forced the postponement of the first race in the 2013 SMLRS season. We are working with Smoky Mountain Speedway to decide on a make up date for the race.

Currently the next race on the schedule is Saturday May 25th at North Georgia Speedway.

2013 SMLRS Race #1 - May 4th, Smoky Mountain Speedway

21st April 2013 - In just two short weeks the Southern Mod Lite Racing Series will heat up again for the first points event of 2013. Smoky Mountain Speedway will host the first season event, and three series races in 2013. Diversified Enclosures & Screens will be on hand all season as the presenting sponsor of the action packed open wheel division. Now with over 30 Mod Lites in TN & GA, the 2013 season is sure to be a success. Fans have been on the edge of their seats in the first few weeks of weekly racing action at Wartburg Speedway.

The SMLRS will join the U.S.C.S. Sprint Cars & Midgets on Saturday May 4th at the 4/10 mile Smoky Mountain Speedway for an open wheel extravaganza. Last September saw a wheel to wheel 20 lap feature between Late Model aces Shannon Buckingham & Ross White as they jumped in Mod Lites for the evening. Buckingham rose to the top after a last lap 360 by White coming to the checkered flag.

The feature will pay $400 to win and $50 to start the main event. On top of that any driver carrying the Tennessee RV Front Runner Challenge decals (available at the SMLRS tent on race day) is eligible for an additional $50 to win and $25 for a 2nd place finish. Westhaven Speed Equipment will present the Hard Charger in the feature with a $25 gift card.

(RaceCeivers are mandatory for all SMLRS events).

The second SMLRS points event will be Saturday May 25th at North Georgia Speedway in Chatsworth GA.

Friday November 9th - The season officially wrapped up on Friday night at Sullivan's Restaurant on Kingston Pike in Knoxville. The first ever SMLRS banquet was held with nearly 40 attendees. There was a lot of big news announced on Friday for the 2013 season. The top five drivers in points were recognized as well.

Things kicked off with new plans and format changes for the upcoming second season. The SMLRS plans to book a 10-12 race schedule of series races in 2013 with a purse that pays $400 to win and $50 to start each race. Wartburg Speedway will remain the home track for mod lite racing in between the series races. Wartburg Speedway will host at least two of the series races in 2013 as well as have a weekly racing point standings and fund. (One of the series races will take place on Wednesday July 3rd). The idea behind this is to allow those interested in racing only Wartburg Speedway a chance to race exclusively there or to allow those interested in chasing only series points to do so. This should help the growth of the class across the board.

10 Series races with 16 car fields will result in $17,500 in purse money. In addition, the biggest news of the banquet was the announcement of Diversified Enclosures and Screen as the 2013 series sponsor. With their addition for 2013, the points payout will go 10 drivers deep and the champion will earn a minimum of $2,000.

The awards section of the program began with the appearance of Robbie & Casey Moses along with Owner Roger Sellers from Smoky Mountain Speedway. Smoky Mountain Speedway presented driver Tony Kelly with a roll-over trophy for his spectacular crash back in September. They also announced two series races for 2013 which will occur on Saturday May 4th (with the USCS sprint cars) and Saturday September 21st (with the Southern All Stars).

In addition Roger Sellers also announced the series first contingency sponsorship for 2013. Tennessee RV will pay an additional $50 to each series event winner and $25 to each runner up as long as those drivers are carrying the Tennessee RV decal on their cars. That would make each event winner's purse $450. Roger also provided each driver present a fire extinguisher and purchased each driver's meal at the banquet. We cannot thank Tennessee RV enough for the support of our racing series!

From there all the series sponsors and t-shirt sponsors were recognized. The West Haven Speed Equipment Hard Chargers were handed out to the 8 drivers that earned the $25 certificate to West Haven. The Wartburg Speedway champion Josh Pugh and the top 5 drivers in points were recognized as well as the Summer Holiday Shootout champion John Stout.

Concluding the evening was the presentation of trophies, payout and awards to the top five drivers in the 2012 Southern Mod Lite Racing Series. JOSH PUGH was crowned as the first series champion. Josh collected a $500 purse, a large trophy and champion jacket. He won over runner up John Stout, third place finisher David Appleby, fourth place finisher Ron Dodson, and fifth place Alan VanWhy. Josh Pugh also collected a carbon fiber battery as well from Braille Battery. John Stout was awarded a race wrap from Outlaw Graphics in Crossville TN. David Appleby won a new body from White Lightning Bodies in Karns TN. Ron Dodson won a fire retardant undergarment suit from Counter Fire. Alan VanWhy won $100 towards body work from JCM Components.

2013 is shaping up to be even better and more exciting for those cars with "Big Excitement in the Little Package". We look forward to even more growth from the 21 cars we now have in TN. 2012 saw 22 competitors with 10 different winners. Look for the SMLRS on your local schedule as they bring the show to YOU!
